As John’s career was coming to an end… - Acts 13:25

There was a man who had three sons. The eldest was a handsome and intelligent boy. “You, son, will be a doctor someday,” he proudly announced.

The second child was charming and eloquent. “You,” the father beamed, “will be a famous lawyer when you grow up.”

Then came his third son. The boy was neither good-looking nor smart. “And you…” said the father, “you can become a priest!”

I laughed the first time I heard that story. Maybe because it captures our attitude when it comes to our giving to the Lord. The best and brightest are reserved for a lucrative career. And we sigh with regret when a brilliant one turns to religious life.

“Sayang… matalino pa naman,” I heard someone say about a successful accountant who gave up her career to serve the Lord fulltime.

The world often looks at serving in church or doing charity work as commendable when you do it over and above a successful career. But when you turn away from a high paying job to go into ministry work, people think you’re crazy.

John didn’t think that way. For him, following the Lord was no sideline. He made it his main business. In fact, he made it his career.

Is it yours? -Rissa S.

REFLECTION:
Following Jesus is a career everyone can pursue regardless of the profession you’re in.

Lord, loving you is my main business. Let everything else fall into the shadows.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; – John 10:27

Monks and nuns have long hours for prayer each day.

We can’t do that. And God doesn’t expect us to do that—or we won’t be able to do what He wants us to do as fathers and mothers and husband and wives and brothers and sisters living in this world.

For most of us, prayer may mean meditating on Scripture for ten minutes in the morning or during lunch break. For others, it may mean dropping by the Blessed Sacrament for five minutes on the way to work. For office workers, it may mean praying during your one-hour commute in the bus. For nursing mothers, it may mean praying while the baby is sleeping on your breast. For housewives, it may mean praying while cooking—before the kids come home from school.

Discover how you can connect with the Lord in your daily situation—and just do it! -Bo S.

REFLECTION:
How can you hear His voice in the midst of the noisy world around you?

Lord, help me to find Your voice in my busy life. Train me how to search for You in the midst of my world.

Chicken Soup For The Soul

I was sitting on a beach one summer day, watching two children, a boy and a girl, playing in the sand. They were hard at work building an elaborate sandcastle by the water's edge, with gates and towers and moats and internal passages. Just when they had nearly finished their project, a big wave came along and knocked it down, reducing it to a heap of wet sand. I expected the children to burst into tears, devastated by what had happened to all their hard work. But they surprised me. Instead, they ran up the shore away from the water, laughing and holding hands, and sat down to build another castle. I realized that they had taught me an important lesson. All the things in our lives, all the complicated structures we spent so much time and energy creating, are built on sand. Only our relationships to other people endure. Sooner or later, the wave will come along and knock down what we have worked so hard to build up. When that happens, only the person who has somebody's hand to hold will be able to laugh.

A strong woman works out everyday to keep her body in shape;
But a woman of strength builds relationships to keep her soul in shape.

A strong woman isn't afraid of anything;
But a woman of strength shows courage in the midst of fear.

A strong woman won't let anyone get the better of her;
But a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.

A strong woman makes mistakes and avoids the same in the future;
A woman of strength realises life's mistakes can also be unexpected blessings, and capitalizes on them.

A strong woman wears a look of confidence on her face;
But a woman of strength wears grace.

A strong woman has faith that she is strong enough for the journey,
But a woman of strength has faith that it is in the journey that she will become strong.

This is pretty strange or odd how it worked out this way.  I was really amazed when I first read this from an email of a colleague five years ago. I was inspired by the message that I did retain the message in my inbox even upto now (and never would I erase it from my mailbox.. ever!).

The Center of The Bible.

What is the shortest chapter in the Bible?
Answer - Psalms 117

What is the longest chapter in the Bible?
Answer - Psalms 119

Which chapter is in the center of the Bible?
Answer - Psalms 118

Fact: There are 594 chapters before Psalms 118
Fact: There are 594 chapters after Psalms 118

Add these numbers up and you get 1188

What is the center verse in the Bible?
Answer - Psalms 118:8

Does this verse say something significant about God's perfect will for our  lives?

The next time someone says they would like to find God's perfect will for their lives and that they want to be in the center of His will, just send them to the center of His Word!

Psalms 118:8 (NKJV) "It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man."

AMAZING, ISN'T IT?

It’s New Year! Just in time, I have been contemplating of creating a Christian Blog, some sort of a repository of all those inspirational stories, thoughts and reflections that I’ve come across as I go through with my soulful journey in life. I have been blogging for more than a year now, and have read lots of other blogs in the web. Everything’s quite similar though. My blog and all those blogs I’ve browsed –- they all speak about the author’s adventures of their day to day life. Now, I wanna make something different. I wanna spread something more substance in the world wide web through Christian blogging.

I have read an entry posted by a fellow blogger at Wordpress, and from what she has written, she seemed to speak on my behalf (regarding my idea of creating a Christian blog.) So I extracted a portion of her article, and thought of sharing it to you. Here’s what she wrote:

Within my circle of friends, family and colleagues, it is well accepted that the Internet is fraught with evil influence and with an excessive amount of vile content. Books have been written to this point and countless sermons have been preached. Seminar presentations have been spoken and position papers have been written. It seems clear to those of moral integrity that the Internet is a media which calls for cautious and intense scrutiny.

Having said that, and more to the point of this post, is the understanding that the Internet is an incredibly powerful tool–both for evil, but also for good. Indeed, the Internet has virtually changed our world. Consider that only a few years ago, the word Google was unknown. "Let's Google that," said to someone of recent generations would have produced a quizzical look, with not a bit of understanding. A foreign language would have been spoken. (It is interesting to note that even the spell checker here, questions the word Google.)

I try not to run on about it, but I have yet to get past my awe at such a tool as the Internet. That I can sit at my desk and access the libraries of the world, astounds me. That with a few keystrokes, I can post words that reach around the globe, gain information and cultivate new friendships is simply amazing.

Today I am making a definite call for good people to flood the Internet. Let us make a statement of morality, impeccable speech, beauty, integrity and godliness. I hope I am not "preaching to the choir", for I know there are excellent Christian sites already here, and you may be the only ones reading this. Let us hope, though, for a flood of well-written uplifting material that will dilute and finally swallow up the ugliness and ungodliness on the Internet.

In my two other blogs, they all speak about me. My Friendster blog says "Welcome To My World". My Yahoo Blog says "It's All About Me". For this new blog I have just created, it’s no longer “all about me”… rather, “it’s all about life”.

Happy blogging everyone!
